Kush Ayurveda “spa” at The Yoga Barn in Ubud, Bali. If you don’t know about TYB then you should look into it while you’re visiting Ubud. But back to the spa because it’s way less exhausting getting pampered!
I use the term spa lightly because really this is like no spa I’ve ever been to. And with good reason this is an authentic Ayurvedic spa.
Ayurvedic medicine — also known as Ayurveda — is one of the world’s oldest holistic (whole-body) healing systems. It was developed thousands of years ago in India. It is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit.
The treatment I chose was:
The key Ayurvedic therapy to steady the mind, strengthen the senses and the classic external treatment for mental strain, insomnia, stress, tension headaches, migraine and anxiety. This treatment includes a soothing upper body Abhyanga Massage.
Kindly re-schedule for another time if you are experiencing fever, head/chest inflammation, eye/ear/throat/sinus infections, flu & heavy cold.
What actually happened? Well basically nothing listed.. but better I suppose. I arrived 15 minuted early as requested they sat me down. My therapist came by to give me a cold towel for my face and hands as well as a welcome drink consisting of cold water with a spike of lemon grass. Very refreshing.
10 Minutes later I was led to my room. It seemed a bit awkward because there was two beds. She handed me disposable underwear (yuck) and told me gently to strip and get under the sheet. Well easier said than done because there were construction workers chilling on a hill right outside my room with a beautiful open window facing them.
I made it onto the bed very gracefully I asked her if I needed to take my hair out and she said yes and helped me. She also offered ear plugs due to the construction noise behind us. I accepted and it was an excellent choice, ear plugs put you into a sort of trance while wearing them.
My hair was in french braids because I have put hair oil in it last night which I apologized for. You’ll see how ironic this is in a minute. Next she gave me avery splendid upper body massage focusing on all my knots trying to unkink them.
For the second half I was moved to the other bed, this one was wooden but still comfortable with some pillows. Now comes the irony.. She put cold eye presses onto my eyes and proceeded a very calming slow waterfall of nut oil onto my forehead and hair for 30 minutes.
A quick head massage and upright back massage later I was ready to slide out of there. She tied my hair up in a cloth and sent me back to the relaxing area. She brought me some cinnamon-y ayurvedic tea, told me not to wash my hair for at least an hour and left me to get some rest and reflection.
This was like nothing I’ve ever done before and besides saying don’t plan anything before or after this treatment I was unbelievably unprepared for what I was walking into. I’m very happy with the results I do feel calmer and I was able to do some goos thinking during the oil phase while also telling myself to relax and stop thinking. I would recommend this treatment for anyone stressed who also wants shiny hair. If you don’t believe in the Ayurvedic aspect of opening up your third eye then it’s a nice combo treatment if nothing else.
